DoD Establishes Military Cyber Command

Cyberspace is the next great frontier to defend for the U.S. Defense Department. DoD architectures are potentially vulnerable to attacks and probes from adversaries as diverse as nation-states to disgruntled individuals. The U.S. Defense Department is in the final stages of creating a new military command to defend against attacks on the national military computer systems. Some statistics are helpful to understand the sheer size of the the cyber domain the DoD has to protect :

  • The U.S. Defense Department has 15,000 computer networks
  • The U.S. Defense Department has seven million computers and other network devices
  • Three million log-ons to DoD systems each day
  • Millions of bot scans and thousands of potentially damaging probes attack DoD systems very day
  • Cyber attacks cost billions of dollars in computer and network security programs every year, and require the attention of some 90,000 Defense Department employees
  • More than 100 foreign intelligence services have the capability to launch cyber attacks against DoD systems, as do countless criminal organizations and individual hackers

The U.S. military now considers cyberspace an operational domain, just like land, sea, air and outer space. The DoD officials are working to develop military doctrine and procedures for cyberspace operations and to increase the department’s expertise in cyber security.

Market Research Media forecasts that the U.S. Federal Cybersecurity market will be growing steadily – at about 6.2% CAGR in the next six years.
